The S&P 500 (SP500) is the most widely followed stock market index and the most representative benchmark of the U.S. economy. Made up of the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the United States, it is considered the true pulse of Wall Street and a benchmark for institutional investors around the world.
Unlike the Nasdaq 100, which is more heavily concentrated in technology, the S&P 500 offers broad sector diversification across technology, healthcare, finance, consumer goods, energy, and industry. This diversification generally gives it lower volatility than the NAS100, with daily moves of 30 to 80 points, making it a more accessible instrument for beginners.
For prop firm traders, the SP500 is ideal for trend-following strategies. The index has a long-term structural uptrend interrupted by tradable technical corrections. Psychological support and resistance levels (5,000, 5,100, 5,200...) are widely respected and can make position management easier.
Major catalysts for the SP500 include Fed (FOMC) decisions, NFP and CPI reports, quarterly earnings from major companies, and significant geopolitical events. Each can trigger moves of 50 to 150 points in a matter of hours, creating significant trading opportunities.
On TopTraderPrime, the SP500 is available with a spread of 0.40 points and leverage up to 1:100.
