The FTSE 100 (Financial Times Stock Exchange 100) is the flagship index of the London Stock Exchange (LSE), bringing together the 100 largest companies listed in the UK. Dominated by the energy (BP, Shell), financial (HSBC, Barclays), and commodities sectors, the FTSE 100 has a more defensive, dividend-oriented profile than its US counterparts.
One unique feature of the FTSE 100 is its international exposure: most of its constituent companies earn the bulk of their revenue overseas, meaning that the strength or weakness of the pound directly affects the index’s valuation. A weaker GBP tends to support the FTSE 100, and vice versa, creating opportunities for correlated trading strategies.
For prop firm traders, the FTSE 100 is active during the London session (8:00-16:30 CET), the first major trading period of the global financial day. Its volatility of 80 to 150 points per day is ideal for intraday strategies with reasonable targets. UK economic data—including GDP, employment, inflation, and retail sales—can trigger the most significant moves.
The correlation with GBP/USD and oil prices is especially important for understanding FTSE 100 movements. Traders who follow these related markets gain a significant analytical edge.
At TopTraderPrime, the FTSE 100 is available with a spread of 0.80 points and leverage up to 1:100.
