Natural gas (NATGAS) is one of the most volatile commodities in the financial markets. Its extreme sensitivity to weather conditions—especially winter cold snaps and summer heat waves—can create dramatic price moves, offering unique opportunities for prop firm traders.
Unlike oil, whose prices are shaped by OPEC agreements and relatively predictable geopolitical dynamics, natural gas is primarily influenced by weekly EIA inventory data, 2-week weather forecasts, and U.S. production data (the United States is the world's largest producer). These factors can create short-term volatility that is often higher than gold or oil in relative terms.
For prop firm challenges, natural gas calls for especially disciplined risk management because of the potential for extreme moves (20 to 50% in a few days during severe winters). Stop-losses should be calibrated accordingly, and position sizes should be smaller than for other instruments.
Seasonal strategies are especially relevant for NATGAS: demand typically increases in winter (heating) and summer (air conditioning), creating calendar patterns that experienced traders may be able to take advantage of. Thursday's EIA inventory releases are the most important weekly events.
On TopTraderPrime, NATGAS is available with a spread of 0.003 and leverage up to 1:100.
