The Nikkei 225 is the flagship index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE), made up of Japan’s 225 largest companies. Led by industrial and technology giants—including Toyota, Sony, SoftBank, and Mitsubishi—the Nikkei is a barometer of the world’s third-largest economy and a key player in Asian financial markets.
The relationship between the Nikkei 225 and the Japanese yen is one of the most reliable correlations in trading: a weaker yen (USDJPY rising) is generally favorable for the Nikkei because it improves the competitiveness of Japanese exporters. This inverse correlation can create compelling opportunities for correlated trades.
For prop firm traders, the Nikkei 225 is active during the Asian session (1h-8h CET), a less common trading window for European traders but one that offers unique opportunities. With volatility of 200 to 500 points per day, the index offers considerable profit potential. Bank of Japan (BoJ) decisions are the most important catalysts—the BoJ’s ultra-accommodative policy has been a key driver of the Nikkei’s rise in recent years.
Japanese economic data (GDP, Tankan, employment), earnings from major Japanese companies, and USDJPY trends are the main fundamental factors to watch when trading this index.
