Prop Firm Rules in 2026: Drawdown, Profit Targets & Requirements
Understand all the prop firm rules in 2026, including daily and maximum drawdown, profit targets, minimum trading days, and consistency requirements.
Prop Firm Rules in 2026: Drawdown, Profit Targets & Requirements
Before starting a prop firm challenge, it’s essential to understand every rule inside and out. Just one breach can invalidate your progress—even if you’ve already hit your profit target. Here’s the complete guide to the rules applied at TopTraderPrime in 2026.
The two drawdown rules
Daily Drawdown
Definition: The maximum loss allowed in a single trading day, calculated from the highest balance reached that day.
At TopTraderPrime: 4% of the initial capital
Example for a 100 000$ account:
- Starting balance: 100 000$
- You make 2 000$ in the morning → balance = 102 000$
- Daily drawdown is now calculated from 102 000$
- Daily loss limit: 4% × 100 000$ = 4 000$
- If you lose 4 000$ from the day’s high, the account is invalidated
⚠️ Key point: At TopTraderPrime, daily drawdown is calculated based on your initial capital, not your current balance. This rule protects your profits and makes the calculation straightforward.
Maximum Drawdown
Definition: The maximum loss allowed over the entire challenge, measured from your starting capital.
At TopTraderPrime: 8% of the initial capital
Example for a 100 000$ account:
- Initial capital: 100 000$
- If your balance drops below 92 000$ at any point during the challenge, the account is invalidated
- This rule still applies even if your balance later recovers
Recommended strategy: Never lose more than 5% of your initial capital in total—always keep a 3% safety buffer below the 8% limit.
Profit targets
Phase 1: 10% profit
You need to grow your capital from 100 000$ to at least 110 000$, without breaking any drawdown rules.
There’s no time limit at TopTraderPrime—take as long as you need to reach your target with confidence. Passing a challenge in 3 weeks is better than failing one in 3 days.
Phase 2: 5% profit
Once you pass Phase 1, you start again with the same capital and need to reach 5% profit. The drawdown rules remain the same.
Phase 2 tests whether you can perform consistently over a second period. Some traders find it easier because they’ve already proven their edge in Phase 1.
Funded Account: 80% of profits
After passing both phases, you trade with TopTraderPrime’s real capital and receive 80% of all profits generated. Payouts are available monthly.
Minimum trading days rule
To pass a challenge, you must trade on a minimum number of distinct days. This rule helps prevent strategies that rely on a single lucky trade.
At TopTraderPrime, the minimum number of days is clearly displayed on your dashboard. Spread your trades across multiple days to avoid any surprises.
Instrument and strategy rules
Permitted instruments
All 47 available instruments on TopTraderPrime are permitted: forex, indices, gold, silver, oil, crypto, and US stocks. There are no asset-category restrictions.
EAs and VPS permitted
TopTraderPrime allows expert advisors (EAs) and VPS for automated trading. There’s just one restriction: EAs that exploit technical platform vulnerabilities (latency arbitrage) are prohibited.
Overnight trading
There are no restrictions on overnight trading at TopTraderPrime. You can keep positions open over the weekend if your strategy calls for it.
Consistency Rule
The Consistency Rule is designed to ensure your performance is steady and isn’t based on one exceptional trade.
Principle: No single trade should account for a disproportionate share of your total profits. This rule encourages disciplined, repeatable trading—exactly what TopTraderPrime looks for in its funded traders.
The most common rule violations
Mistake 1: Forgetting about floating daily drawdown Many traders don’t realize that daily drawdown is recalculated each time a new high is reached. If you have a positive P&L during the day, your loss limit increases accordingly.
Mistake 2: Confusing daily and maximum drawdown These are two separate rules. You can breach daily drawdown even if your maximum drawdown is small—and vice versa.
Mistake 3: Overlooking minimum trading days Some highly successful traders hit their profit target in just a few days but forget to check whether they’ve traded for the required minimum number of days.
Mistake 4: Holding positions through major news releases An NFP report or FOMC decision can trigger a 200-pip move in seconds, causing a well-managed account to hit its daily drawdown limit. Close your positions before high-impact news releases.
TopTraderPrime rules at a glance
| Rule | Value | |---|---| | Daily drawdown | 4% of initial capital | | Maximum drawdown | 8% of initial capital | | Phase 1 target | 10% profit | | Phase 2 target | 5% profit | | Profit split | 80% for the trader | | Maximum leverage | 1:100 (forex/gold) | | EAs permitted | Yes | | Overnight trading | Yes |
Conclusion
Prop firm rules may seem complicated at first, but they follow a simple principle: prove you can trade profitably and with discipline over a set period. Understand the rules before you begin, and you can turn the challenge into an opportunity—not an obstacle.
